Overview

Roman Shades, in detail

A roman shade is the one window covering that behaves like upholstery. Raised, it is a neat stack of folds; lowered, it is a calm panel of fabric that softens a room far more than a roller ever could.

Every fold is set with a sewn-in batten so the drop stays even, wash after wash. Choose from our library or send your own fabric and we will tailor the shade to it, lining included.

  • Sewn-in battens keep every fold the same depth
  • Thermal or blackout lining hidden inside
  • Customer’s own fabric (COM) accepted
  • Flat, hobbled, relaxed and pleated fold styles
  • Chain, cordless or motorised lift

Measuring

Measuring made simple

Roman shades look best mounted outside the recess, overlapping the wall by 60–80 mm so the fabric has room to fold.

Width

Opening plus 70 mm each side.

Drop

From the mounting height to 10 mm above the sill or floor.

Stack

Allow 25% of the drop for the raised stack.

Good to know. For a period window with an arch, mount above the arch and let the shade overlap the curve — the folds hide the irregularity.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I use my own fabric?

Yes. Send us the fabric with the required width and we tailor the shade to it, including lining and battens.

How do I clean a roman shade?

Dust or vacuum monthly. Lined shades should be dry cleaned; spot clean only for small marks.

Do they suit large windows?

Up to 3 m wide in one piece. Wider openings are usually split into two shades on a shared headrail.

Will the folds stay even?

Yes — each fold has a sewn-in fibreglass batten, so the drop stays consistent rather than stretching over time.

Can they be motorised?

Yes, with a tubular motor in the headrail working with our remote or app.

How deep is the stack?

Roughly a quarter of the drop, so a 2 m shade stacks to about 500 mm when fully raised.
